Bill Allerton & John Keane are organising a Harlequin reuinion evening at Bar Abbey (the old cinema) London Road, Sheffield on Friday 23 May at 8:00 pm. It is also John's birthday.

Linda and Mike will be there and the aim is to try to find many of the musicians who played in the pub. John will lead a play-around in the style of those evenings in the Harlequin, though perhaps of shorter duration.

The evenings at Bukowskis have definitely finished. We wish Maggie & Geoff all the best in their new ventures and we wait to see what appears when Bukowski's name comes off the building.

1st December 2003

Sadly, our evening at Bukowski's on Wednesday 17th December is likely to be our last "Ain't Misbehavin' Badly at Bukowski's" night. We have certainly enjoyed our past 20 months there and thank Maggie and Geoff very much for their hospitality. Many thanks too to our regular audience and "spots" - Jim (the photographer), Dave and Terry especially.

Merry Christmas and tuneful 2004 from Andy, Glynis, Karl & Myke.

 

 

October 2003

Following our Summer World Tour (see photos) Jigtales will feature with guests in a benefit concert for Oxfam at the Rotherham Rugby Club, Badsley Moor Lane, Clifton, Rotherham on Wednesday 19th November from around 8:30 pm. Admission only 50p, includes raffle ticket. Proceeds will go to Oxfam Rotherham, owned by Oxfam and staffed entirely by volunteers, so all monies raised will go straight to the charity.

Jigtales is the name given to the band featuring Glynis, Karl, Myke and Andy, which is Jig for a Kiss without Stella and Earthtales without Prof!

We were saddened to learn that Roy Airton passed away in January 2003.

Roy was a gifted multi - instrumentalist (guitar, banjo, whistle, sitar to name but a few) with an interesting repertoire of folk songs. He was a regular at the Hanover sessions in the mid to late '90s and also performed at The Harlequin.

He regularly organised the Hanover quiz, delivering the questions in inimitable style, often with the help of his unseen assistant Sven.

He was also an actor and theatre director, organising tours to Scotland and Denmark and contributing to the work of the Broomhall Community Centre.

More importantly he was a good friend to many and gifted with a slightly wicked and offbeat sense of humour. He will be missed.

The evening at Bukowski's is now called "Ain't Misbehavin' Badly at Bukowski's". Well, we didn't get anywhere calling it the Blues and Folk club and "Ain't Misbehavin'" is more representative of the style of the music we're doing there. Also there's a big poster at the side of the stage for Ain't Misbehavin'.

"Anything Goes" is also representative, but where's the pun in that. Come along and find out on Tuesday 19th November.

Christmas Dinner at The Fat Cat costs just £12.00. Send me an email to book your place and arrange to hand over a £5.00 deposit. If you don't wish to come for the meal, come along after 9.30pm to join in the festive fun for nowt.

We hear that Vicky has left The Earl of Arundel & Surrey. Also that Jake is now holding a session on alternate Sunday evenings at The Kelham Island Tavern (just around the corner from The Fat Cat). On the other alternate Sunday there is an "All Join In" music session.

We hear that The Harlequin, our centre of entertainment for almost 10 years, has now been demolished. The fate of the pot bellied stove is not known. However, the landlady - Linda - happily continues the various music sessions at The Red House on Solly Street and there is a fine selection of beers too.

The Blue Horses club will not be meeting at The Earl of Arundel and Surrey over summer (i.e. NOT July 15th or Aug 19th).

is confirmed for 9th July, 20th August, 17th September and 15th October 2002.

The Play On club will meet in the conservatory at The Gardeners Rest on Neepsend Lane on June 7th (opposite the former Stones brewery, off Rutland Road).

On St. Georges day, we had a splendid evening at Bukowski's "Piano Bar" on London Road. The format is much the same as at our other clubs - a "singers" night featuring all kinds of music, modern and traditional plus poetry, monologues etc. However, this takes place in a cafe style atmosphere with an excellent buffet during the interval, catering well for vegetarian diets (but there are also meat dishes). The bar is exclusively for those attending, hence there is no queueing and no need to miss any of the performance. There is also a ready supply of fresh coffee and soft drinks for drivers.

The experience will be repeated on Tuesday June 4th at 8:30 pm. Admission is £3-00 which includes the generous buffet and free entry to a prize draw.

The Sheffield Mayfest will be at The Kelham Island Museum on Monday 6th May, 11:30 am to 6:00 pm. See The South Riding Folk Network for further details.

Play On at The Fat Cat and Blue Horses at The Earl of Arundel & Surrey continue as usual.

The Blue Horses Club meets again at The Earl of Arundel & Surrey on March 18th, the day after St. Patrick's Day.

Play On will meet again at The Fat Cat on Friday 5th April .

The next Play On folk club will be held once again at The Fat Cat near Kelham Island.

We meet on Friday 1st March, which is St. David's (patron Saint of Wales) day, so come arm-fulled with daffodils and leeks.

The Hanover Sessions will be in future be held on the first Thusday of the month only.

Vicky is the new landlady at The Earl of Arundel & Surrey. She has just left the Harlequin (see historical note), which, according to rumour, is now to be turned into offices!

Tracy is the new landlady at The Shakespeare

Due to a National Darts event also taking place on 1st February at The Shakespeare, the Play On club will meet in the function room, upstairs at The Fat Cat. This date would have been our first anniversary at The Shakespeare.

The venue for future dates is under review.

Jig for a Kiss wish you all a Happy New Year !

Last Tuesday, we were shaken to hear that Rita is leaving The Shakespeare. Just over two hours later we were shocked to hear that Ann and Phil are leaving the Earl of Arundel and Surrey. All are departing this week. We sincerely thank them for their support of our folk clubs and wish them all well in their new ways of life.

As far as we can tell at this time, both clubs will be able to continue at the venues on the usual dates.

Come back to this page in the next few days to meet the new hosts at the two pubs!

The Hanover Sessions are also continuing under a new landlordship. Join Karl and Giles next Thursday (24th Jan) to help keep these "Anything Goes" (well almost) sessions going, at The Hanover, Clarke Street, Broomhall, from about 9:30pm.

Following the untimely death of Myke Barritt in May 2010, Karl and Andy are joined by Phoebe Taylor Thorpe in the hosting of the Play On evenings at the Fat Cat.
